Specimen preparations were based on the procedures to simulate these construction processes in the laboratory. First, water contents of the sandy gravel, volcanic cohesive soil, and silica sand were adjusted to 27, 70, and 26%, respectively. Second, 10%-concentration bentonite slurry was mixed with the soil for 2 min to obtain 150-mm flow value of the soil–slurry mixture according to JIS R 5201. Finally, bentonite powder was added with proportions of 25–150 kg/m3 and re-mixed using the soil mixer for 2 min.
